Company Sergeant Major Barter won this honour on 16th May 1915, at Festubert. Having gained the first line of enemy trenches, he called for volunteers, and with 8 gallant men attacked the German position with bombs, capturing 3 officers, 102 men and about 500 yards of enemy trenches. Later he found and cut 11 of the enemy's mine leads.
